We understand Immigration DNA Testing

DNA testing is a powerful tool when it comes to identifying family relationships, so when this is used to determine the relationship of the family members of a UK citizen, it becomes invaluable in supporting immigration cases.

UK Visas and Immigration logoSometimes families become separated, due to political circumstances or even war. Family members can come to live permanently in the UK if they are a dependent relative of someone who is already a permanent resident.

Non-UK citizens can apply for permission to settle permanently in the United Kingdom. Get in touch if you are aged 18 or over and have a parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a British citizen or person settled in the UK.

If someone is applying for British citizenship, the UK Visas and Immigration Service may ask for a DNA test to prove that there is a family relationship between the two parties. This DNA test must follow a strict chain of custody to be admissible in a UK court or immigration hearing.

The Legal Aid Agency has produced a range of information to assist solicitors and individuals in establishing whether their case is eligible for Legal Aid funding, and this can be accessed at the following website – (legal aid checker) and we recommend you use this as a starting point before embarking on the complex process of applying for legal aid for your immigration application.

Will the Home Office and The UK Visas and Immigration Service accept the results?

We are a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No 2773, so our paternity testing can be used in UK courts and that the results are accepted by the Home Office and The UK Visas and Immigration Service. When you first call or email or friendly customer service team on 0333 600 1300 or info@alphabiolabs.co.uk you will be asked whether the DNA test is for your own knowledge or for immigration purposes.

Once it is clear it is for immigration purposes our support team can advise you every step of the way to ensure that the results will be accepted by the Home Office and The UK Visas and Immigration Service. For example, they will advise that the samples collected for DNA testing be taken by someone fully qualified to do so (please see ‘how do you collect the sample?’) and that the chain of custody is kept throughout. This means that the required procedures will be followed to ensure that the results can then be used for their intended purpose and not rejected.

If you are unsure as to whether or not a certain situation or action you are considering taking will result in the rejection of your results then please call the support team on the number above. We are here to help at any point during your case.

How do you collect the sample?/additional fees?

If you or anyone who is to be tested is in the UK, then one of our dedicated and fully qualified sample collectors can come to visit and collect the sample for an additional fee. If you are able to visit one of our walk-in centre locations (subject to opening days and times) one of our sample collectors will take a sample free of charge.

As for anyone to be tested outside of the UK then a GP or other medical official will have to be arranged to take the sample. We will not charge for sample collection in this case, but the GP may request a fee for this service. Fees concerning the delivery of the sample to our laboratory are dependent upon the best quotes we obtain from a courier. These fees are calculated by the courier company themselves depending on your requirements; AlphaBiolabs have no influence over these particular costs.

A DNA sample is usually collected with a mouth swab for DNA testing, is totally painless and has no age limit (no age minimum or maximum).
Please note: AlphaBiolabs is not responsible for the poor quality of the samples it receives from third party sample collectors such as your local doctor. Also AlphaBiolabs is not responsible for delays in receiving your samples from third party courier companies.

What happens with my results?

Once the results are available a report will be sent to you via email with the specific results and what they mean in terms of the chosen method of testing. For example with paternity DNA testing the report will provide a percentage of probability that an alleged father is the true biological father of the child and an explanation of what this means in terms of the likelihood that they are related in this way.

On receiving this report, if you are still unsure as to what the results mean, then just call our support team on 0333 600 1300 or email info@alphabiolabs.co.uk for more guidance.

How long will the results take?

The results of your DNA testing for immigration purposes will be ready within 3 working days from when the sample is received at our UK based laboratory before 10:00am. This is an unprecedented turnaround time as standard.

We are not responsible for how long the couriers will take to deliver the sample to our laboratory. However, we will be able to give an estimation of delivery from the information that they provide us with in most cases.

Why would I need a DNA test for immigration purposes?

You may need DNA testing for immigration purposes if you are a UK citizen in order to bring a relative over from somewhere outside of the UK. This may be advice from your solicitor or you may have been asked to do so by the Home Office.

DNA testing that is performed by a UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratory such as AlphaBiolabs can be used to prove a biological relationship between relatives, with the results being approved by the Home Office and The UK Visas and Immigration Service. Once they are satisfied that such a relationship exists then arrangements can be made to bring them in to the country.
