If England qualify for EURO 2016 they could be having random drug tests performed later at night, with UEFA also introducing a biological passport system similar to those used in cycling and athletics.

In a bid to keep drugs out of the tournament the World Anti-Doping Agency’s new code for random drug tests at night has been passed into French law, as they are the host nation for the European Championship.

Player’s with an early morning training session may be particularly disgruntled being awoken soon after an early bedtime snooze as testing can now take place between 6am and 11pm, when previously the cut off was 9pm.

There is also the possibility that ‘night checks’ could take place until 6am under strictly supervised conditions but this is only if consent has been provided by the athlete for the scheduled drug testing.

UEFA Kick Off Season with Anti-Doping

UEFA explained the magnitude of the drug testing in a statement that said: “In advance of the UEFA EURO 2016 tournament, UEFA will conduct the largest pre-tournament testing programme ever implemented. All players with the potential to be selected for participating teams will be subjected to testing from 1 January 2016 via UEFA’s annual programme.”

The statement adds: “UEFA will kick off the 2015/16 season with the strongest anti-doping programme ever seen in European football.

“This includes the introduction of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s steroidal biological passport to improve the identification of steroid use; a strengthening of rules related to team and player whereabouts; long-term sample storage to permit retrospective [testing] and a continuation of its comprehensive blood and urine [testing].”

Although it is doubtful that we will be waking athletes up in the middle of the night, AlphaBiolabs can provide random and scheduled drug testing for workplaces and we can test for a number of substances including steroids and performance enhancing drugs.
