Are you confident that your employees can safely perform their specific job? Can you prove that they are not suffering from a medical condition or taking any substances that could cause a loss of consciousness or impairment issues? These issues could compromise your employee’s ability to undertake their work and pose a significant risk to their health and safety. As an employer you have a duty of care to prevent the ill health of your workers.
Fit for work assessment
A Fit for work assessment evaluates an individual’s physical and mental capacities by undertaking several tests. As such, this medical is tailored to assesses whether your employee can safely carry out a specific job or task. Fit for work assessments are needed for a range of roles, including the railway industry (see also Personal Track Safety), work at sea, work with substances hazardous to health (solvents, biological agents, fumes and dust), work in excessively noisy environments and night shifts. The assessment provides reassurance that the role will be performed safely and will not cause harm to any co-workers or the general public.
The assessment takes about 45 minutes and measures lung function, blood glucose, mobility, blood pressure, urinalysis, pulse and oxygen saturation. It also checks hearing and colour blindness, as well as the usual weight, height and BMI.
