Our expert DNA scientists have developed an efficient paternity test that is UKAS-accredited, competitively-priced, rapid and award-winning. All paternity testing is performed on site at our laboratory in Warrington: we don’t outsource or send samples overseas.
Paternity tests to suit your needs
There are two types of paternity tests available: Peace of Mind and Legal. Peace of Mind DNA testing kits can be easily bought online and posted direct to your home. The testing kits include full instructions and simply involve rubbing a mouth swab on your inside cheek to collect buccal cells. AlphaBiolabs offers these types of home testing kits for just £99 for next day results or £169 for same day results. Peace of mind tests can also be bought at some local High Street stores.
Legal paternity tests are needed to stand as evidence in court, for child custody issues, CSA or to change the name on a birth certificate. As such, they need to be performed under specific instructions, known as chain of custody. AlphaBiolabs has a network of professional sample collectors that can ensure that the correct individual is providing the sample by checking ID, taking photographs and getting signed paperwork. Legal samples can also be collected for free at our nationwide Walk in Centres.
AlphaBiolabs also offers an innovative DNA prenatal paternity test, which can be used to non-invasively determine paternity of a baby before birth. The test is performed in-house in the UK and can be performed as early as 6 weeks after conception. Results can be fast-tracked and made available within 4 days.
No father? No problem
If a father refuses to consent to a paternity test, alternative DNA relationship tests can be performed to establish a direct biological relationship via other family members. Grandparent DNA tests, for example, could prove a link between an individual and one or more of their father’s parents. In a grandparent test, a DNA profile for each individual taking part in the test is produced. Since a child inherits half of his or her genetic profile from each biological parent, when a child’s father is unavailable for testing, we can look to the grandparents to determine if they contributed DNA to the child’s genetic profile.
In the same way, DNA aunt testing or DNA uncle testing (also known as avuncular tests) can be performed on the father’s sister or brother to establish a biological relationship to a child. DNA sibling testing can establish whether or not brothers and sisters have the same father. Another option is Y chromosome testing, which can prove that alleged male relatives share a common paternal line. If the males have different Y chromosome profiles then they are not related.
Continually innovating paternity testing
As well as the ‘mouth swab’ paternity tests, AlphaBiolabs is launching two new methods of DNA acquisition. Following extensive trials, toothbrushes have been proven to be a good source of DNA. An advantage is that samples can be collected in a more subtle way (although consent is still needed). This could be particularly useful in paternity disputes to avoid awkward questions from older children.
DNA testing finger nails is another method whereby samples can be collected easily. This kind of test is useful when someone has passed away as a mouth swab cannot be used to collect DNA. The nails can be collected under chain of custody conditions for legal cases. A DNA sample may be needed to prove paternity in the case of probate or will disputes. Alternatively, a DNA profile could be created to produce a lasting memento of a loved father.
