In our latest expert article, we answer some of your most common questions about Y chromosome testing. What is Y chromosome testing? How does the test work? How much does it cost? Read on to find out…

What is Y chromosome testing?

Y chromosome testing, also known as Y DNA testing or Y-STR testing, is used to help confirm whether individuals share a common paternal line. This test compares the Y chromosome profiles of men. A full match between profiles confirms that the men share a paternal line. If the males have different Y chromosome profiles then they do not share the same paternal line.

The test is only performed in men because the Y chromosome is only present in males. Men have one X and one Y chromosome, while females have two X chromosomes.

How does Y chromosome testing work?

AlphaBiolabs uses the most up-to-date DNA testing technology to ensure the reliability and accuracy of its genetic testing. We use the latest 27 marker technology in our Y chromosome testing. In addition, the low mutation rate of the Y chromosome makes this Y chromosome test extremely reliable.

All male children inherit their Y chromosome from their father. These children will in turn pass the Y chromosome inherited from their father to their children when they become fathers. This inheritance pattern means that males coming from the same paternal line will always share the same Y chromosome. This means that the Y chromosome of biological brothers, male cousins and paternal uncles will be identical. Male cousins could use the Y chromosome test to see if their fathers were brothers or to check if they shared a common grandfather or ancestor. A legal Y chromosome test could be used in immigration cases to prove a biological relationship.

Although females cannot directly carry out a Y chromosome test, they can ask a male, paternal biological relative, to take the test on their behalf. This would be useful in the case of proving relationships to paternal cousins, for example, as cousin DNA testing is not as conclusive. Paternity, maternity or Aunt and Uncle tests could also be used for this purpose.

How much does a Y chromosome test cost?

Y chromosome testing starts from just £199 for next day results. Same day results are also possible for an extra £70. The test involves rubbing mouth swabs gently and painlessly on the inside of the cheek to collect buccal cells. No blood sample is needed for Y chromosome testing.
