Can you test who the father is during a pregnancy? Read on to find out…
Forget baby blues or pinks – it may be more important for you to know who the father is of your unborn baby. You cannot begin to enjoy your pregnancy with such a big question hanging over you and this may be harming your relationship with the alleged father. There is now a proven, non-invasive, prenatal paternity test which can be carried out at an early stage of pregnancy (6 weeks after conception or 8 weeks after your last period) to give you the answer.
The test works by analysing the unborn baby’s DNA within the mother’s bloodstream and because a baby inherits DNA from both parents, the prenatal paternity test identifies which half of the DNA is inherited from the mother and which half is from the father. If related, both the unborn baby and father will share DNA.
Getting the test done during pregnancy
The mother and alleged father both need to agree to provide samples for the confidential test. All the mother needs to do is provide is a blood sample (usually taken from her arm) and the alleged father needs to collect cheek cells using a mouth swab, which is provided in the test kit. Although both samples do not have to be collected at the same location – they should be collected around the same time to avoid any delays and the risk of the blood sample haemolysing.
The process is simple, with options to meet your preference:
- Blood and mouth swab samples can be collected at our Walk in Centres which are located in Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, north London, Preston, Warrington and south London.
- We can arrange for one of our highly trained sample collectors to come to you – your house or anywhere else convenient to collect your samples.
- Alternatively, you can arrange your own blood collection through your GP or another medical professional.
As soon as your samples are received in our UK-based laboratory, the testing process will begin right away.
