During pregnancy, it is possible to do a paternity test on an unborn baby to determine the identity of the father.
AlphaBiolabs’ prenatal paternity test enables the potential father to determine whether he is the biological father of the baby as soon as 6 weeks after conception. Scientific advances in technology means it is now possible to separate the DNA from the foetus, which enters the bloodstream of the mother. This DNA is then analysed and compared against the DNA samples collected from both the potential father and the mother.
How are the samples collected?
The potential father needs to provide a sample of cheek cells, which are collected using a mouth swab.
A blood sample is needed from the mother, which must be collected by a phlebotomist, a nurse or one of AlphaBiolabs’ sample collectors. The two samples don’t need to be provided in the same location, but they should be collected at a similar time to reduce any delays to the testing process. The blood sample is time sensitive so needs to be sent to the laboratory immediately after it is collected.
Other options for collection include having one of our sample collectors visit an address of your choice, or we have a network of Walk in Centres throughout the UK. Using a Walk in Centre can help to reduce collection fees while also making it possible for both the mother and the potential father to provide their samples at the same time.
How does the prenatal paternity test work?
The prenatal paternity test involves our genetic team analysing 35 short tandem repeat (STR) markers, known as alleles, that are found in the DNA profiles of the baby, the mother and the potential father. There will be two copies of each STR marker in the sample from the foetus: one from the mother and one from the father. Therefore, if both the mother and the man are biological parents, there will be a perfect match across all the markers. Should there be any anomalies, then this will indicate that the man is not the biological father.
We can provide prenatal paternity test results in 4–7 days. The cost of the test is £875 for results in 7 working days although, for an additional £200, you can receive the results in 4 working days. Interest-free credit is available for 6 months. Call 0333 600 1300 to apply.
