The AlphaBiolabs IgM-IgG Combined Antibody Rapid Test is similar to the type that was widely used by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to detect COVID-19 infections. It works by detecting both early and late marker antibodies in human finger-prick blood samples.
The antibody immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the first antibody to appear in response to an initial exposure to an antigen (a toxin or other foreign substance), which induces an immune response in the body. It is widely accepted that IgM provides the first line of defence during viral infections. This is followed by the generation of adaptive, high affinity IgG responses for long-term immunity and immunological memory. Therefore, testing of COVID-19 IgM and IgG antibodies is an effective method for the rapid detection of COVID-19 infection. It also means that the AlphaBiolabs’ coronavirus screening test can provide information on the stage of infection.
- Detection of IgM antibodies tends to indicate a recent exposure to COVID-19.

Understanding the results of a coronavirus screening test
There are four simple steps to the AlphaBiolabs’ coronavirus screening test:
- Collect the finger prick blood sample
- Add the blood sample to the testing device sample.
- Place 2–3 drops of buffer to the sample
- Get your results after 15 minutes
Up to three detection lines can be seen in the detection window. The control (C) line appears when the sample flows through the cassette. The IgM (M) line appears when the coronavirus IgM antibody has been detected. The IgG (G) line appears, then the coronavirus IgG antibody has been detected.
