Yes, you can. If you perform a DNA test while pregnant at home, it can help to give you an answer if there is uncertainty surrounding an unborn baby’s father. It is non-invasive and completely risk-free, to give you total peace of mind.
This type of paternity test can be carried out as early as seven weeks into the pregnancy.
How do I do a prenatal DNA test at home?
If you would like to have your prenatal DNA test performed at home, we can arrange for one of our specially trained sample collectors to visit your house. This ensures that your samples are collected correctly, and safely returned to our laboratory for testing.
Alternatively, we can send you a testing kit and you can arrange your own collections through your GP or another medical professional such as a trained nurse or phlebotomist.
Is it safe to do a prenatal DNA test at home?
Yes, there are no risks.
The prenatal paternity test that we offer is 100% safe for both mother and baby. Unlike with older, more invasive procedures which could increase the possibility of miscarriage, this test is entirely risk-free. Our sample collectors are also experienced and trained, so you know you’re in safe hands.
How does a DNA test at home work?
Our prenatal paternity test analyses the baby’s DNA within the mother’s bloodstream. We need a blood sample and two mouth swabs from the mother, along with two mouth swabs from the alleged father to collect cheek cell DNA.
The mother and father’s samples do not need to be collected in the same location, but we do advise that they should be collected around the same time. This helps to prevent delays in the testing process, and also reduces the risk of the blood samples haemolysing.
A baby inherits DNA from both of its parents. Our prenatal DNA test examines DNA samples from the mother, the alleged father, and the unborn baby, in order to identify which half of the DNA is inherited from the mother, and which half is from the father. If the baby and the alleged father share DNA, there is at least a 99% chance that the man is the child’s biological father.
When will I receive the results of the prenatal DNA test?
