In 2024, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), in collaboration with law enforcement partners, seized over 17 million doses of illegally traded medicines in the UK, with a potential street value exceeding £40 million.

Consumers are taking a risk with their health if they buy prescription medication online or outside of a regulated pharmacy, as they have no way of knowing whether it contains the correct active ingredient, or if it has been tested and approved for human use.

Key drug categories seized include:

  • Erectile dysfunction medications – In 2024, the MHRA seized 5.5 million doses of erectile dysfunction medicines, making them the most commonly seized category.
  • Painkillers and sedatives – A combined total of 8.3 million doses of pain treatments and sedatives were confiscated, highlighting the demand for these substances.
  • Weight-loss drugs – The MHRA seized 400 pre-filled pens believed to contain semaglutide (commonly branded as Ozempic or Wegovy) in 2024, a fourfold increase compared to the previous year. Concerns have been raised about fraudulent versions being sold online containing dangerous doses or other medicines such as insulin.

These medications are often shipped directly to consumers from unauthorised websites, bypassing safeguards that ensure proper dosage, safety, and suitability.

Illegally imported prescription drugs pose serious health risks:

  • Incorrect dosages: Many illegally sourced medications contain too much or too little of the active ingredient, increasing the risk of overdose or treatment failure.
