The stats on prescription drug misuse
The latest data paints a stark picture of drug misuse in the UK, highlighting a concerning upward trend in the use of prescription medications alongside illegal substances.
A landmark study led by academics from the University of Bristol and published in the journal Addiction found that 1 in 3 patients prescribed opioid analgesics, which include codeine, tramadol, oxycodone and morphine, exhibited signs of dependency. Alarmingly, 1 in 10 went on to develop full opioid dependency, underlining the risk associated with prolonged use.
Additionally, from 2023-24 alone, 3,872 adults entered treatment for benzodiazepine misuse (including diazepam and temazepam), reflecting ongoing concerns about their potential for dependency.
Gabapentinoids, such as pregabalin and gabapentin which are used to treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain have also been linked to misuse, with pregabalin – dispensed more than nine million times in England in 2023 alone – having the fastest-rising mortality rate of any prescription medicine in the UK.
Societal impact
The misuse of prescription drugs poses a serious threat to public health and is contributing to record levels of drug-related harm in the UK.
In 2023, 5,448 drug poisoning deaths were recorded across England and Wales – the highest number ever reported – with prescription opioids and benzodiazepines commonly involved.
This issue also places significant pressure on healthcare services, with rising hospital admissions, increased demand for treatment, and emergency interventions linked to overdose and dependency putting a strain on NHS resources.
The National Crime Agency estimates that the impact of drug misuse on healthcare, the criminal justice system and lost productivity costs the UK around £20 billion annually.
