An immunoassay antibody test for coronavirus could be the key to beating this pandemic. Also known as serological testing, these blood tests look for specific antibodies in your blood to detect whether you have been exposed to COVID-19.

Scientists around the globe are racing to get answers through serological testing: detecting these tell-tale antibodies in the blood will identify the real number of people in a population who have ever come in contact with the virus. These results will indicate immunity to COVID-19 and determine how long society’s shutdown needs to be. And importantly, the quick test can establish whether frontline staff can go back to work.

After extensive research, AlphaBiolabs is able to offer a rapid and highly accurate immunoassay antibody test for coronavirus and COVID-19 infections. The screening test is based on the same technology that was widely used by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to detect COVID-19 infections. It works by detecting both early and late marker antibodies in human finger-prick blood samples.

How does an antibody test for coronavirus work?

The antibody immunoglobulin M (IgM) provides the first line of defence during viral infections and is the first antibody to respond to an initial exposure. The immune system’s secondary response is to generate immunoglobulin G (IgG), which is the most common type of antibody in blood.

The AlphaBiolabs antibody test screens for both COVID-19 specific IgM and IgG antibodies. This rapid detection of COVID-19 infection also provides information on the stage of infection. Detection of IgM antibodies tends to indicate a recent exposure to COVID-19, whereas detection of IgG antibodies indicates a later stage of infection. It can therefore answer the questions of Do I have coronavirus? And Have I even had coronavirus?

The screening test is very easy to perform and just involves four simple steps:

  • Collect the finger prick blood sample
  • Add the blood sample to the testing device
  • Add 2–3 drops of buffer to the sample
  • Get your results after 15 minutes

The results appear as (up to) three detection lines in the detection window. A control (C) line appears when the sample flows through the immunoassay device showing that it is operational. The M line appears when the coronavirus IgM antibody has been detected, and the appearance of the G line denotes that the coronavirus IgG antibody has been detected.
