Are home paternity tests accurate?

AlphaBiolabs’ home paternity tests are accurate and performed to the highest standards. Our testing laboratory is UKAS-accredited (No. 2773), to the quality technical standard of ISO 17025, and we are certified to ISO 9001. We also employ some of Europe’s leading DNA scientists to ensure the highest level of technical ability.

Our scientists analyse up to 42 DNA markers in our home DNA paternity testing and it is usually possible to provide conclusive results. If the tested man is indeed the biological parent undergoing paternity testing, both child and father will share identical sections of DNA at each marker. It is therefore possible to identify which half of the child’s DNA is inherited from the father and which half is from the mother. Ideally, we would prefer the mother’s sample as well as the father’s, but we can still perform the paternity test without the mother’s sample.

Our home paternity test can be bought online and posted direct to any convenient address. The testing kits can also be bought at some High Street stores. You can get your results the next day from as little as £99. Same day test results are also available for an extra £70.

The home paternity test kit includes:

  • A paternity test request/consent form to complete.
  • Full instructions on how to collect the samples. This is a very simple process and just involves rubbing the mouth swabs provided on the inside of your cheek.
  • A self-addressed envelope to send your DNA test samples back to us.
  • Three DNA sample collection swab packages containing two mouth swabs in each package for the alleged father and child. More swabs can be included as necessary.
  • DNA test sample envelopes for each individual undertaking the testing.

We offer three types of paternity testing

As well as the standard home paternity tests, we also offer prenatal paternity tests and toothbrush testing.

Prenatal paternity tests can be used to non-invasively determine paternity of a baby before birth. This innovative test can be performed as early as 5 weeks after conception (or 7 weeks after the last period). The test is completely safe to the mother and unborn child. The mother needs to supply a blood sample and the alleged father uses a mouth swab to collect his DNA. Prenatal paternity testing is priced at £875 and results can take up to 7 days. A faster express service can get results back within 4 days for an extra £200.

Following extensive trials, toothbrushes have been proven to be a good source of DNA and can be useful for paternity testing. An advantage is that samples can be collected in a discreet and unobtrusive manner. Using a mouth swab on older children could lead to awkward questions, whereas simply sending in their used toothbrush for paternity dna testing could avoid any embarrassment. If our scientists can extract a DNA profile from the toothbrush sample, a paternity test can be performed in the usual way using up to 42 DNA markers.
