Celebrating Son and Daughter Day

Son and Daughter Day started back in the 1930s when a young boy in Missouri, USA, asked his parents why Mother’s Day and Father’s Day were celebrated, but there wasn’t a day for sons and daughters.

Over the years the idea of Son and Daughter Day gradually caught on.  Parents honoured the date by placing a flower representing each of their children in a vase, and displaying it in a prominent area of their home.

Although Son and Daughter Day is originally a US observance day, there’s no reason why families across the UK can’t embrace a new tradition!

Whether your sons or daughters are young or old, toddlers or teens, every year 11^th August is a day to celebrate the unique bond between parent and child. It’s a day for parents to let their children know how special they are, whether they’re biological children, stepchildren or adopted children.

How to celebrate Son and Daughter Day in the UK

Of course, you could choose to celebrate Son and Daughter Day in the traditional US way. Why not pick out some flowers for your sons and daughters and display them in a vase at home?

If your children still live with you, this is the perfect time to do something fun! Take a trip to the beach or a theme park, or bake their favourite treats if it’s a rainy day.

If you have older children who no longer live at home, why not make plans to mark the occasion together? Arrange a meal out or a family day trip. If your children live far away, today is the perfect excuse for a family video call too – with games and a quiz included!
