Celebrating the role of healthcare science this Healthcare Science Week

Today (13 March) marks the start of Healthcare Science Week: a national initiative designed to raise awareness of the diverse range of specialisms within healthcare science.

Organised by the NHS, the week – which runs until 19 March – also highlights the vital role that healthcare science plays in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Throughout the week, healthcare institutions are being encouraged to host events either in healthcare settings (e.g. the foyer of a hospital) or in community settings such as schools, colleges and universities, to inspire people to think about careers in healthcare science.

Healthcare professionals are also being encouraged to join the discussion on social media using the hashtag #HCSWeek2023.

Why is healthcare science important?

Healthcare science plays a fundamental role in patient care and covers a wide variety of scientific specialisms, from genetic and reproductive science to physiological sciences: investigating the various systems of the body to identify abnormalities or restore function.

Scientists working within the field of healthcare use their knowledge and expertise to diagnose illnesses and, in turn, change lives. They also develop ground-breaking treatments that would not otherwise exist and perform vital work in the field of prevention.

At AlphaBiolabs, we recognise the importance of healthcare science in people’s day-to-day lives.

That is why we offer a suite of health tests designed for individuals who want to keep track of their health and wellbeing.

We also employ top scientists who are not only specialists in their respective fields, but who are committed to delivering innovation in the field of healthcare testing, as well as maintaining the highest quality testing standards within our UK laboratory.

Home health testing to suit your needs

We offer a variety of at-home health tests that give you valuable insight into your health and, in some cases, enable you to seek confirmatory testing, diagnosis and treatment more easily.

Our health testing includes:

Home STI testing (from £29) – whether you are experiencing symptoms that indicate you could have an STI, or do not have symptoms but just want a test to put your mind at rest, an at-home STI/STD test is a simple, accurate way of finding out whether you have contracted an infection. Depending on which test you order, you will need to provide a urine sample, vaginal swab sample, lesion swab sample, or a finger prick blood sample.

Genetic Coeliac Disease Test (£99) – whether you have symptoms that indicate you could have coeliac disease, or simply want a test to rule it out, our home Genetic Coeliac Disease Test is a fast, accurate and reliable way to find out whether you carry the genes linked to coeliac disease, with only a cheek swab sample required.

Genetic Lactose Intolerance Test (£99) – whether you are experiencing symptoms that could indicate primary lactose intolerance, or simply want a test to rule it out, our Genetic Lactose Intolerance Test is a fast, accurate and reliable way to find out whether you carry the gene variations linked to primary lactose intolerance, with only a cheek swab sample required.
