Giving back in 2024: a year of supporting worthwhile causes

As one of the UK’s leading DNA, drug, alcohol and health testing laboratories, we are deeply committed to giving back to the communities in which we work, supporting meaningful causes that make a real impact.

Working with like-minded organisations that share our values has been a cornerstone of AlphaBiolabs’ charitable efforts throughout 2024, and we’re proud to have played a small part in each charity’s story this year.

In this blog, we’re looking back at the causes AlphaBiolabs has supported in 2024.

Giving Back campaign

Over the last few years, we’ve donated to several charities working with some of the UK’s most vulnerable children and families, via our highly-regarded Giving Back campaign.

This year, we introduced a new spin on our Giving Back campaign by donating to charities chosen by our customers.

For every legal testing instruction received from family law and social work professionals, we entered the customer’s name into a charity draw. Every two months, a randomly-selected customer then nominated a charity of their choice to receive a £500 donation from AlphaBiolabs on their behalf.

Here are the incredible charities our customers chose to support this year:

We’ve donated £2,500 to these causes during this year’s Giving Back campaign, with December’s randomly-selected customer (and nominated charity) to be announced in January 2025.

We’re proud to have extended our support to these charities, and grateful for our customers’ commitment to making a difference.

Internal fundraising and awareness

It’s been a busy time for fundraising in the office this year, with AlphaBiolabs colleagues taking part in several initiatives to raise money as part of national awareness campaigns, including:

  • Macmillan Coffee Morning (25 September) – where everyone was invited to show off their skills in an office bake-off competition.
    Our Coffee Morning raised £456 for Macmillan Cancer Support after donations were matched by AlphaBiolabs.
  • Movember – several AlphaBiolabs colleagues took part in Movember, where men are encouraged to grow a moustache to raise funds in support of men’s health issues including mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
    Our amazing team raised £181 for this life-changing cause, which was matched by AlphaBiolabs, bringing the final total to £362.

As well as fundraising, we also feel it’s also important to acknowledge awareness days throughout the year, including initiatives that might resonate on a personal level with AlphaBiolabs colleagues.

Other awareness campaigns and national events we’ve supported include Mental Health Week (May), Pride Month (June), Alcohol Awareness Week (July), and World Menopause Day (October)

Employee charity draw

In October, we introduced our monthly charity draw for employees, where a randomly-selected colleague chooses one of four nominated charities to receive a donation from AlphaBiolabs.

We’ve been really pleased with the response so far, with Mind and KIND each receiving £100 donations after being nominated by AlphaBiolabs colleagues and look forward to continuing this initiative in 2025.

Supporting Zoe’s Place

As a North West business with its roots in Liverpool, we were pleased to make a £1,000 donation in November to support Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice.

Since 1995, Zoe’s Place has provided essential respite, palliative and end-of-life care for infants with life-limiting conditions across Merseyside and the North West. But in October, with their lease expiring, they found themselves in a race against time to raise £5m and secure a new home.

The fundraising drive to save Zoe’s Place received widespread press attention, with individuals and businesses across the region rallying together to raise the funds needed.

Their goal was achieved just in time, and a new charity has since been formed to take on sole responsibility for the Liverpool site and oversee the construction of a new hospice.

We’re delighted to have played a part in their success story!

Festive donations

We’ve made several donations to worthwhile causes in the run up to Christmas, including:

  • £1,400 to Trussell food banks including Warrington, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Coventry, North London and South London
  • £500 to Comfort Cases, a charity dedicated to providing backpacks filled with essential items for children entering the care system
  • Toys collected by AlphaBiolabs colleagues, donated to Cash for Kids’ annual Mission Christmas campaign
  • Food collected by AlphaBiolabs colleagues, donated to Warrington food bank

Making a difference all year round

At AlphaBiolabs, we’re proud to make a positive impact beyond delivering an exemplary day-to-day service for our customers, giving back to the communities in which we work – not just at Christmas, but all year round.

As 2024 draws to a close, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting worthwhile causes that make a difference in communities across the country, with plans to build on the success of these activities in 2025.
