Is the coronavirus antibody test accurate?

AlphaBiolabs is able to offer a rapid and highly accurate immunoassay antibody test for coronavirus and COVID-19 infections. It works by detecting both early and late marker specific antibodies in human finger-prick blood samples.

Diagnostic testing and immunoassay antibody screening devices that identify active coronavirus infections in people are vitally important to help suppress the spread of the virus.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which involves using a nasopharyngeal swab, is the most commonly used test for the laboratory detection of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). However, the turnaround time for results is a huge disadvantage and can take 2-3 days. In that time, infected people may have spread the virus to many others. In addition, recent studies suggest that a high percentage of patients show no or few clinical symptoms. This too provides further grounds for the virus to spread.

Thankfully, a rapid screening method based on antibody detection of coronavirus can provide accurate results within 15 minutes. AlphaBiolabs’ German-made COVID-19 immunoassay devices are of a very high quality. The medical device contained within the kits has an EC-Declaration of Conformity with the Essential Requirements Annex I of the Directive 98/79/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 October 1998 on in vitro diagnostic medical devices.

The test works by detecting specific antibodies. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the first line of defence during viral infections, which demonstrates a current COVID-19 infection, followed by immunoglobulin G (IgG).

As such, screening for COVID-19 IgM and IgG antibodies is an effective method for the rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. It can also provide information on the stage of infection, so for example, if you currently have the coronavirus infection, if you have had the infection in the previous 6 weeks, or if you haven’t had it at all. The results are displayed in the detection window of the testing device. There is no need to send any samples away to a laboratory for testing.

“The sensitivity of our immunoassay is the best we have observed and is greater than 99.9% diagnostic sensitivity for IgG detection, and 91.8% diagnostic sensitivity for IgM detection”, said AlphaBiolabs’ Managing Director David Thomas. “In addition, the diagnostic specificity for IgG reaches 99.5%, whereas the diagnostic specificity for IgM is 99.2%.”
