Jeans for Genes Week 2026: Why AlphaBiolabs is getting behind this important cause

Every year, thousands of schools, workplaces and communities across the UK swap their usual work attire for a pair of jeans, all in support of one simple cause: helping children and families affected by genetic conditions.

Jeans for Genes Week runs from 14-20 September and, at AlphaBiolabs, we’re showing our support by donning our best jeans and raising funds for children and families affected by genetic conditions across the UK.

As the UK’s No.1 DNA testing laboratory, genetics is at the heart of what we do, from confirming biological relationships to screening for chromosomal conditions during pregnancy, meaning Jeans for Genes Week feels especially close to home.

Here, we explain what Jeans for Genes is all about – and why it matters.

What is Jeans for Genes?

Founded over 30 years ago and run in support of the Chronic Granulomatous Disorder (CGD) Society, Jeans for Genes is the UK’s annual fundraising campaign for children and families affected by genetic conditions.

The idea is simple: swap your usual outfit for a pair of jeans and make a small donation, typically £1 or £2. Although this may seem like a small gesture, collectively it makes a meaningful difference to families across the UK who are living with the daily realities of a genetic condition.

Money raised through Jeans for Genes helps fund:

  • Practical, day-to-day support for families, including nursing care and specialist equipment
  • Information and guidance for those newly diagnosed or navigating a genetic condition
  • Activities, counselling and online support networks that help reduce isolation
  • Vital research into rare and complex genetic conditions

What are genetic conditions?

Genetic conditions, examples of which include Down’s syndrome, sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis, occur when a change or mutation in a person’s genes or chromosomes affects how their body develops or functions.

Some are inherited from one or both parents, while others occur spontaneously, with no prior family history.

It’s estimated that 1 in 25 children in the UK is born with a genetic disorder, meaning that in any given classroom, at least one child is likely to be affected.

These conditions vary enormously in how they affect individuals but, for many, a diagnosis brings lifelong implications, including ongoing medical care, specialist equipment, and emotional and practical support needs that can place significant strain on families.

Despite this, awareness of genetic conditions, and the day-to-day challenges they bring, is often limited. Initiatives like Jeans for Genes Week play an important role in changing that, not only by raising vital funds, but by encouraging conversations that help break down stigma and build understanding.

Why this cause resonates with us

At AlphaBiolabs, genetics isn’t simply a cause we support once a year – it’s central to the laboratory testing services we provide every day.

One area where this is particularly relevant is our Non-Invasive Prenatal Genetic Test (NIPT), which allows expectant parents to screen for certain chromosomal conditions during pregnancy, using a simple blood sample from the mother.

Available from as early as 10 weeks into pregnancy, our NIPT analyses small fragments of the baby’s DNA circulating in the mother’s bloodstream to assess the likelihood of conditions such as Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and more, depending on which test you choose (Standard, Advanced or Premium NIPT).

Unlike invasive diagnostic procedures like amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), this method is 100% safe for mum and baby, making it a safer screening option for many expectant parents.

While NIPT is a screening test rather than a diagnosis, it can give parents earlier information and greater clarity at a pivotal time, helping them prepare, seek further guidance where needed, and make informed decisions about their pregnancy.
