What makes our STI testing different?
At-home STI testing has grown in popularity in the wake of the pandemic, with many people opting to order STI test kits online rather than going to their GP or local sexual health clinic.
However, this growth in online STI testing providers has come with a downside.
A recent study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that “very few” STI/STD testing services meet the official standards for sexual health tests.
The study, which looked at 30 providers of STI testing, found that many paid-for services contradicted national guidelines.
Issues identified included inappropriate infections being tested for, incorrect samples being used for testing, lack of advice for patients post-diagnosis, and tests licensed for professional use only being marketed for self-testing.
At AlphaBiolabs, we understand the sensitivities surrounding STI/STD testing and the importance of compliance with national guidelines, as set by the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), the Faculty of Sexual Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
That’s why our STI testing has been developed in accordance with these stringent guidelines, meaning you can be confident our tests meet the highest possible standards for sexual health testing.
This includes the types of samples we analyse, the pathogens that we test for, and advice provided should an infection be detected in your sample.
Our laboratory is also UKAS-accredited to the international quality standard ISO 17025.
