What makes our STI testing different?

At-home STI testing has grown in popularity in the wake of the pandemic, with many people opting to order STI test kits online rather than going to their GP or local sexual health clinic.

However, this growth in online STI testing providers has come with a downside.

A recent study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that “very few” STI/STD testing services meet the official standards for sexual health tests.

The study, which looked at 30 providers of STI testing, found that many paid-for services contradicted national guidelines.

Issues identified included inappropriate infections being tested for, incorrect samples being used for testing, lack of advice for patients post-diagnosis, and tests licensed for professional use only being marketed for self-testing.
