As another 1600 students test positive for coronavirus at Newcastle Upon Tyne’s two universities, the need for rapid and accurate PCR testing in Newcastle has never been greater.
Newcastle University has confirmed that 1003 students and 12 members of staff have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week – a massive rise from the 94 students reported last Friday. There have also been 619 new cases among students at Northumbria University, compared to a figure of 770 issued last week.
Many of these students may not be showing any symptoms (asymptomatic). Data show that up to 80% of people infected with COVID-19 will show no symptoms or only minor ones. It is therefore essential that they start quarantining to avoid any further spread of the virus.
If you have been in contact with one of these students, or if you start showing symptoms such as a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, you need to take a COVID-19 PCR test.
Accurate PCR testing at home in Newcastle
The AlphaBiolabs home COVID-19 PCR test detects the presence of COVID-19-specific RNA within a positive sample. This 100% accurate test can be posted out to you so you can take your samples in your own home. This means less contact with anyone else, and therefore less chance of spreading the virus if you are contagious.
Full instructions are included in the sample collection kit, and your samples are returned to the testing laboratory in pre-paid, tracked-return packaging. You will receive your results by email the next working day.
If positive you can start quarantining and limit contact with your family, friends and colleagues. If negative, you are not infective.
The home COVID-19 PCR test costs £150 and is performed by an award-winning UKAS-accredited laboratory
