Prenatal DNA testing in Cardiff

Non-invasive prenatal DNA testing involves analysing a baby’s DNA within the mother’s bloodstream to determine the biological father before the baby is born. This advanced procedure is 100% safe to the unborn child and available in Cardiff.

In the past, invasive procedures (such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling) would have been relied upon to get a sample of an unborn baby’s DNA. However, these invasive methods carried a slight risk of miscarriage. AlphaBiolabs’ prenatal DNA test does not carry such risks. We can perform this non-invasive procedure in Cardiff as early as 5 weeks after conception (or 7 weeks after the last period). 

How does the prenatal DNA test work?

All the mother needs to do is provide a blood sample. The alleged father’s sample simply involves using a mouth swab to collect DNA from his cheek cells. These samples do not need to be collected at the same location, but they should be collected around the same time to avoid any delays and the risk of the blood samples haemolysing.

Because a baby inherits DNA from both of its parents, the prenatal DNA test analyses the DNA samples to identify which half of the DNA is inherited from the mother and which half is from the father. Both father and baby will share DNA if the tested man is indeed the biological father.

Prenatal DNA testing options in Cardiff

There are three sample collection options for prenatal DNA tests in and around Cardiff.

• The blood and mouth swab samples can be collected at our conveniently-located Walk in Centre (Grange Medical Practice in Grangetown).
• We can arrange for one of our highly trained sample collectors to come to your house, your place of work, or anywhere else convenient to collect your samples.
• You could request that another medical professional collect your samples (such as a GP). Please note that this may incur a fee.

Once your samples are received at our UK laboratory, the testing process can begin. You can order your prenatal DNA test here. Your results will be available within 7 days for £875.
