Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing involves analysing a baby’s DNA within the mother’s bloodstream to determine the biological father before the baby is born. This advanced procedure is 100% safe to the unborn child and available in Leeds.

In the past, invasive procedures (such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling) would have been relied upon to get a sample of an unborn baby’s DNA. How does the DNA paternity test work?

All the mother needs to do is provide a blood sample so there are no side effects or risk of miscarriage. The alleged father’s sample simply involves using a mouth swab to collect DNA from his cheek cells. These samples do not need to be collected at the same location, but they should be collected around the same time to avoid any delays and the risk of the blood samples haemolysing.

Because a baby inherits DNA from both of its parents, the prenatal paternity test analyses the DNA samples to identify which half of the DNA is inherited from the mother and which half is from the father. Both baby and father will share DNA if the tested man is indeed the biological father.
