Prenatal paternity testing in Manchester

We can perform non-invasive prenatal paternity testing in Manchester as early as 7 weeks after conception (or 9 weeks after the last period). To get a sample of an unborn baby’s DNA, procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling used to be performed. However, these are both invasive methods and therefore incur a slight risk of miscarriage. Thankfully, our prenatal DNA test does not carry such risks.

How does the prenatal paternity test work?

Prenatal paternity testing involves analysing a baby’s DNA (which can be found in the mother’s bloodstream from 7 weeks into pregnancy) to determine the biological father before the baby is born.

To perform this 100% risk-free test, all that’s required is a blood sample and cheek (buccal) swab samples from the mother, and cheek swabs from the alleged father(s). Because a baby inherits DNA from both of its parents, the prenatal paternity test analyses the three DNA samples (mother, alleged father, and baby) to identify which half of the baby’s genetic profile is inherited from the mother, and which half is from the father. If the man is indeed the biological father, both baby and father will share DNA.
