Prenatal paternity testing: what you need to know

Prenatal paternity testing: what you need to know

Prenatal paternity testing is an incredibly useful tool, making it possible to identify a baby’s biological father before the baby is even born.

In this blog, we break down what you need to know when ordering a prenatal paternity test, how the process works, and what samples are required for testing.

How does a prenatal paternity test work?

A non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test can be used to verify a child’s paternity while the mother is still pregnant, with only three samples required:

  • Cheek (buccal) swab DNA samples from the alleged father
  • Cheek swab DNA samples from the expectant mother
  • Blood sample from the expectant mother

During pregnancy, the unborn baby’s DNA is passed into the mother’s bloodstream via the placenta.

A NIPP test is performed by examining the baby’s DNA together with the parents’ DNA, to identify matching DNA markers.

If the tested man is the biological father of the baby, they will share DNA at every tested marker. If he is not the biological father, this will not be the case.

AlphaBiolabs is the only UK DNA laboratory to hold UKAS 17025 accreditation for prenatal paternity testing, and also offers the fastest results available (in just 3-5 days).

NIPP testing is 100% risk-free for mother and baby

Other forms of prenatal testing, which involve taking cells from the placenta (chorionic villus sampling/CVS) or extracting a sample of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis), pose a small risk of miscarriage.  However, a NIPP test is non-invasive and completely safe for mother and baby.

An AlphaBiolabs NIPP test simply requires a blood sample and cheek swab samples from the mother. Blood samples are time sensitive, and need to be collected by a trained nurse, phlebotomist, or a professional AlphaBiolabs sample collector.

You have three options available to you for sample collection:

  1. Collection at one of our nationwide walk-in centres (FREE with your test)
  2. Arrange for an AlphaBiolabs sample collector to visit you at home or another convenient location of your choice*
  3. Organise your own sample collection (blood sample from mother and cheek swabs from mother and alleged father). In this instance, your test kit will be shipped directly to you in discreet, plain packaging, and you will be responsible for returning all samples to our laboratory for testing

Ideally, all samples – from the mother and alleged father – should be collected around the same time to avoid any delays and reduce the risk of the mother’s blood sample degrading (as blood samples are time sensitive).

If you choose to have your samples collected for free at one of our walk-in centres, or for an AlphaBiolabs sample collector to visit you at a convenient time and location, the AlphaBiolabs sample collector will arrange the return of your samples to our laboratory for testing.
