Seven Russian athletes have been given bans after failing drugs tests, official sources have revealed.

Rusada, Russia’s anti-doping agency, has confirmed that the sportspeople have been banned from competing after they tested positive for banned substances.

One of the most high profile figures to be given a drugs ban was Dmitry Trunenkov, who won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Trunenkov’s Olympic win will not be affected by the decision but he is now serving a four-year ban, backdated to April last year.

Russian walker Alexander Yargunkin failed a drugs test just before the World Championships in 2015. He has now been given a four year ban, deemed to have started on August 26 2015.

Other four-year sanctions were given to wrestler Adlan Minapov, backdated to November 2015, weightlifter Viktoriya Kosenkova, backdated to February 2015, and javelin thrower German Komarov, backdated to June 2015.

Meanwhile, wrestler Turpal Khatuev will be disqualified from competing for a two-year period from November 2015. And rower Yuliya Solomentseva cannot enter any competitions for a 12-month period starting on November 30 2016.

Screening carried out to ensure fairness

Details on what substances each athlete were found to have taken before testing have not been released.

The drugs bans follow allegations of corruption in Russian sport with claims made that efforts were made to cover up positive test results.
