Whether you should take an antigen or an antibody test for Covid-19 will depend on why you want or need to be tested.
Should I take an antigen test or an antibody test?
If you want to find out whether you currently have Covid-19, either as a precaution or because you suspect you might have caught the virus, you should take an antigen test. This type of test will detect the presence of antigens (a protein found on the surface of a virus) in a sample taken from your throat and/or nose to tell you whether or not you have Covid-19.
An antibody test will not tell you if you have an active coronavirus infection. You should take an antibody test if you want to find out whether your body has produced antibodies to help protect you from a future Covid infection.
Some people choose to take an antibody test to find out whether they have had Covid-19 in the past. Others may choose to take the test to find out whether their vaccination has been effective.
Both Covid infections and vaccinations should trigger the creation of antibodies. Antibody tests can provide people with reassurance and peace of mind and if someone finds out that their antibody levels are low, then they may decide to take extra precautions or arrange a booster jab.
Find out if you have Covid-19
If you want to find out whether you have Covid-19, you can choose between a PCR test or a rapid antigen test, often referred to as a lateral flow test. PCR tests are regarded as the ‘gold standard’ in Covid-19 testing and involve sending a throat and nasal swab sample off to a laboratory for analysis. So if you want a result quickly, or are testing regularly as a precaution, then a lateral flow test that you can carry out in your own home or workplace is probably the best option.
Our rapid and non-invasive antigen tests are for business and professional use and will produce an accurate result within 15 minutes. You will need to use a swab to collect a sample of cells from your nasal cavity and then mix it with a solution before adding a small amount of the liquid to the lateral flow device.
If you test positive for Covid-19, the device will display two lines, whereas a negative result will be shown with a single line.
Check your immunity level
If you want to check how immune you are to Covid-19, either from a previous infection or from receiving a vaccination, you can order our advanced laboratory antibody and immunity test. For this test, you will need to collect a small amount of blood from the tip of one of your fingers, using the sterile lancet included in the sample collection kit.
You must then send your sample to our award-winning UK-accredited laboratory for analysis using the pre-paid packaging provided. Within three days of our scientific team receiving your sample, you will be sent a report via email detailing your results.
The report will tell you whether antibodies were found, and how high the antibody concentration level was. This will be given as a numeric value along with an explanation as to whether this is a low, medium or high level.
AlphaBiolabs also offers rapid antibody tests for professional and business use, which can tell you whether or not any antibodies were found in your bloodstream in just 10 minutes. This type of test will only give a positive or negative result and cannot tell you your level of antibodies.
Available in packs of 20 tests, these rapid antibody tests are ideal for employers wanting to carry out testing in the workplace.
