What is a rapid COVID-19 antigen test?

A rapid COVID-19 Antigen test detects a positive or negative case of coronavirus in just 15 minutes.

Using a self-administered sample collection kit to collect a nose and throat specimen, anyone can test themselves for COVID-19 infection and get accurate rapid results on the spot with no requirement for laboratory testing.

The rapid COVID-19 antigen test works by mixing a human nose and throat sample with a small amount of buffer liquid which is then placed into a portable, lateral flow, immunoassay cassette containing an absorbent strip. The strip soaks up the fluid and as it does so detection lines appear on the cassette depending on the result.

In every case, to show the cassette is functioning properly a detection line appears alongside (C) the control line*, and where the result is positive for COVID-19 a second detection line appears alongside ‘positive’ on the cassette. Where there is no positive line, the test is negative.

Rapid COVID-19 Antigen testing will give you the same result as a PCR COVID-19 testing but delivers a faster answer. PCR testing involves a laboratory analysis and is deemed the ‘gold standard’ in COVID-19 testing, with results determined by trained scientists during a process called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis.
