Is a legal DNA test more expensive?
A legal or court-admissible DNA test typically costs more than a peace of mind DNA test for several reasons:
- Sample collection – for a peace of mind test, the DNA samples can be self-collected at home. For a legal test, samples must be collected by a professional sample collector under chain of custody conditions.
- Chain of custody – this is strictly followed for a court-admissible DNA test, ensuring sample integrity and reliability i.e. that the DNA samples are collected from the right people in the correct way.
- Lab accreditation – for the test results to be admissible in court/for official matters, the DNA test must be performed by a UKAS ISO 17025-accredited laboratory. This is not required for a peace of mind DNA test, although any reputable testing laboratory should hold the relevant accreditations to perform DNA testing.
- Reporting – for a legal DNA test, a detailed Expert Report is required that outlines the laboratory’s accreditations, qualifications/experience of the Reporting Scientist, chain of custody information, technical information, a summary of the results and more.
The cost of a legal DNA test can also vary depending on the requirements of the instructing party (i.e. type of test required, number of people being tested, whether samples need to be collected from multiple locations).
You may qualify for legal aid to help you pay for your court-admissible DNA test, depending on your circumstances and reasons for ordering a test.
The Legal Aid Agency has produced a wealth of information to assist individuals who want to check whether their case is eligible for legal aid funding. We recommend using the legal aid checker before applying for legal aid for your DNA test.
