Who is SmartMobile suitable for?

SmartMobile is the ideal solution for family law firms and local authorities who need to safely enforce co-parenting, custody and access arrangements. It helps to create a secure home for children by ensuring an alcohol-free environment.

SmartMobile can also be used to defend against allegations of excessive alcohol consumption.

Is SmartMobile disruptive to daily life?

SmartMobile has been specifically designed for discreet and easy use.

The portable size means that it can be safely stored away when not in use. It can also be charged on the go thanks to USB compatibility.

Is random testing possible with SmartMobile?

Random, scheduled and on-demand testing options are all available, depending on your clients’ needs.

What happens if a participant misses a test?

As the test window nears the end of the allotted time, the SmartMobile unit will beep more frequently. If a testing window is missed, this will be recorded as a ‘Missed Test’ in the online portal.

How loud does SmartMobile beep?

The beep is loud enough to hear from several rooms away.

How long does SmartMobile beep for until a test is recorded as a Missed Test?

The SmartMobile device will beep until the test window closes.

Does the same face need to be detected throughout the testing schedule, to prevent tampering?

The SmartMobile device detects the user’s face when taking a test and the inbuilt camera automatically captures an image as the user takes their test.

If the unit does not detect a human face, the test will fail and the user will need to take another test.

If another person takes the test on the user’s behalf, their image will automatically be captured and so the tampering attempt will be visible in the online portal.

Does the camera require specific light conditions to work effectively?

When taking a test, the amount of light available should be sufficient to read a book. The light should not be excessively bright or shine directly into the user’s face.

If the user does not have adequate lighting, the device may fail to detect their face. Simply turn on more lights to correct this.

How long does the SmartMobile battery last for?

The SmartMobile battery can last for up to 120 hours (around five days) from a single, full charge.

The device will perform data downloads throughout the day, so it is recommended to leave the unit plugged in at all times, unless it is being transported.

Can the SmartMobile unit be used while charging?

Yes. However, if the battery is completely drained, it may take a couple of minutes to restore functionality once the device is reconnected to power.

Will SmartMobile register a reading in a low signal area?

When the device is turned on, the user will see a signal strength icon along the top of the display, just like on a mobile phone. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the unit is placed in a strong signal area.

SmartMobile uses the mobile network to transfer data. The time it takes to download and send reports will depend on the signal strength of the device and network traffic.

How soon after testing are the results uploaded to the portal?

As long as the SmartMobile device has an adequate signal, test results should be uploaded and accessible via the online portal within 5 to 15 minutes.

Is the ‘Breath Alcohol Concentration’ (BAC) level displayed to the user?

SmartMobile is predominantly designed to monitor abstinence.

The BAC level is displayed on all reports, and in the online portal. However, the recorded level is not displayed to the user.

How much does a person have to drink to register a positive result?

On the SmartMobile unit, the default ‘Fail’ is 0.020 BAC (equivalent to 20mg of alcohol per 100mg of blood).

Can the ‘Violation’ notification be turned off?

Three test results can be displayed: Pass, Fail and Violation.

A Fail is any test result over the default Fail set point, but below what would be considered a ‘High BAC Fail’.

A Violation would signal a High BAC Fail (normally, this is twice the Fail set point, but it can be re-programmed as required).

The Violation level could be set very high, so as to register a Fail rather than a Violation, but it cannot be entirely removed.

Is SmartMobile waterproof?

No, the SmartMobile unit is NOT waterproof and should not be submerged in water or other liquids.

Could medicine or mouthwash cause a false positive?

Yes, this is a possibility.

It is therefore recommended that SmartMobile users ALWAYS rinse their mouth with water before taking a breath test to avoid a false positive result.

Users should NOT use mouthwash or a breath freshening agent before taking a test, as many of these contain alcohol.

Is SmartMobile affected by high or low temperatures?

The device should not be stored where it may be exposed to direct sunlight, or near a direct source of heat.

The SmartMobile unit should not be used outdoors when the temperature is below 10°C/50°F. The battery will not charge below 0°C/32°F.

If the unit is too cold, the device may need to warm up before the battery can be charged. Plugging in the power supply will enable internal heaters that speed up the time required to reach operating temperature.

Does the SmartMobile device require any maintenance?

The SmartMobile unit requires periodic service and calibration.

If required, you will be instructed when to bring the device in for service.

What’s the best way to clean the SmartMobile unit?

Only fresh water on a slightly damp cloth can be used to clean the outside of the unit.

Solvent or chemical-based cleaning agents may damage the unit or result in false readings.

Never submerge the unit in water or cleaning liquid.
