Drug and alcohol testing methods
Hair drug testing
Hair drug testing is the preferred method of drug testing for family law cases and the family law courts.
It can be particularly useful for a more comprehensive overview of a person’s drug use. It is known as a ‘wide-window’ form of testing and can determine a history of drug intake for up to 12 months if required.
Our Drug Screen Plus service analyses hair samples for any drug present. We then issue a report on exactly what we find and in what quantities.
Urine drug testing
Urine drug testing is a method that can be used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their urine and analysing it for particular substances
Urine drug testing is known as a ‘narrow-window’ form of testing and the usual period of detection is up to 4 days, although this can depend on the particular substance taken.
Oral fluid drug testing
Oral fluid drug testing is a method that can be used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their saliva and analysing it for particular substances.
An immediate negative result may mean that no further action needs to be taken, but a non-negative result will then undergo confirmation testing from the laboratory to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities
Hair alcohol testing
Alcohol abuse can be detected in head hair by testing for two different alcohol metabolites: ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE). These alcohol markers are absorbed into the hair via sweat and sebum. By performing both hair alcohol tests the evidence is strengthened to determine whether alcohol has been chronically abused. Some types of body hair can also be analysed for EtG.
SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring®
SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® (SCRAM CAM®) is an innovative way of testing a participant’s alcohol consumption over a defined period of time. The tamper-proof SCRAM CAM® bracelet is worn on the ankle from 1 day up to as many months as needed. Because of its transdermal method of detection (through the skin) every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, the non-invasive bracelet provides a comprehensive profile of a participant’s alcohol drinking activities throughout the entire day and night.
Breath alcohol testing
The person being tested for alcohol use blows into a breath alcohol device, and the results are given as a number. The number, known as the breath alcohol concentration (BAC), shows the level of alcohol in the breath at the time the test was taken. It does not measure past use of alcohol.
We have a number of devices we can use for breath alcohol testing dependent on your individual needs.
Nail alcohol testing
Like hair, nails are made from keratin, which is a fibrous protein. As the nail grows, substances can pass from the blood vessels below the nail into the keratin fibres where they become trapped. Biomarkers from alcohol can thus be detected in the nails.
Our nail alcohol testing analyses samples for the EtG marker. These EtG biomarkers become trapped within the keratin fibres along the length of the nail providing a detection period of up to 6 months.
Blood alcohol testing
We recommend a blood test to detect alcohol biomarkers in conjunction with clinical assessment, to gain a greater insight into an individual’s alcohol use. Blood alcohol tests are made up of a liver function test (LFT), a carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) test, a mean corpuscular volume (MCV) test and phosphatidylethanol (PEth) testing.
LFT looks at the functionality of the liver, the same way a medical professional would. CDT test gives a 4-week window of detection period and is a very good indicator if someone is drinking alcohol to chronic and excessive levels. An elevated MCV marker is an indicator of ingested alcohol. PEth is a direct marker of alcohol and is therefore the most accurate of the blood tests to determine alcohol abuse.
