Urine drug testing explained

  • 1 When a person consumes drugs, they are broken down by the liver, and a proportion of the drug and its metabolites are released into the bloodstream, while some of the drug is excreted from the body in a variety of ways, including in urine.
  • 2 The test works by analysing a urine sample for the presence of drugs and their metabolites.

  • 3 Urine drug testing provides what is known as a ‘narrow-window’ detection period of up to 4 days after drugs were consumed.
  • 4 Urine drug testing can be used effectively to complement hair or nail drug testing (both of which provide an insight into historic drug use) to give a much more detailed, accurate picture of an individual’s long-term and short-term drug use.
  • Urine drug testing is ideal for regular use during childcare pre-proceedings. For example, where a parent has sole custody of the child(ren) over a weekend or after planned child visitation.
  • It is also useful for Family Drug and Alcohol Courts (FDACs), where regular, repeat drug testing is required.

What drugs we test for

Where a non-negative result is returned, confirmatory testing is performed at our UKAS-accredited laboratory.

Urine samples can be tested for the following substances:

Sample collection

  • Urine samples for legally-instructed drug tests can only be collected at our walk-in centres across the UK and Ireland. Sample collection is FREE at our walk-in centres for all legally-instructed tests.
  • The sample donor will be asked to provide a urine sample using a fully self-contained urine screening kit that detects the presence of certain drugs in a donor’s urine sample.
  • Prior to sample collection, our trained sample collectors prepare a suitable toilet and washing facilities for the donor to use when collecting their sample. This preparation includes a number of careful measures to reduce the possibility of sample tampering.
  • The donor will then collect their urine sample in private.
  • The sample collector will look at the test strips on the side of the pot. For a negative result, coloured lines will appear on the test strips indicating that none of the substances were detected.
  • For a non-negative result, no coloured lines will appear on the test strips for the corresponding drug. This indicates that the substance has been detected.
  • For non-negative samples, the sample collector will transfer the urine sample in equal quantities into two separate containers, representing an A and a B sample. These samples are then safely transported back to our toxicology laboratory for in-depth analysis, and confirmation of the results.
  • We also offer back-to-lab urine drug testing. For this test, there is no instant screening. Instead, our sample collector will collect a urine sample from the donor at one of our walk-in centres. The sample is then returned to our laboratory for testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our urine drug testing is extremely reliable and accurate, based on the sample provided by the donor at the time of collection.

Our sample collectors follow strict procedures throughout the collection process to ensure that chain of custody is maintained, and results are legally defensible.

Laboratory confirmation for non-negative samples provides further reassurance that all drug test results are 100% reliable, and that the findings are accurate. Furthermore, detailed laboratory analysis removes any doubt whatsoever about which substances were detected.

We offer two options for urine drug testing:

  • Point-of-care testing: our professional sample collector performs an instant screening at one of our walk-in centres, at a time convenient to your client. If the test returns a non-negative result (one or more substances are detected), the sample is returned to our UK laboratory for analysis and confirmation of the result.
  • Back-to-lab screening: the urine sample is collected by one of our professional sample collectors at one of our walk-in centres. There is no instant screening. Instead, the sample is collected and returned to our laboratory for testing, and confirmation where there is a non-negative result.

All legal tests are performed under strict chain of custody conditions, maintaining the integrity of the sample, and ensuring all test results are court-admissible.
