How do we do our grandparent DNA testing?
A Grandparent DNA Test works by comparing the DNA profile of a potential grandparent with their grandchild to identify matching DNA markers. It is commonly used to establish paternity or maternity when the potential parent of a child is unavailable or unwilling to provide a DNA sample, but their biological parents are available to be tested instead.
Because every person inherits half of their DNA from each biological parent, a grandchild will share a proportion of their DNA with each of their grandparents. This makes grandparent testing a useful alternative when a biological parent is unable to take a paternity or maternity test.
Our Grandparent DNA Test analyses up to 45 DNA markers (loci) – double the industry standard for DNA testing – for an accurate, reliable result.
The test kit includes mouth swabs to be rubbed gently and painlessly on the inside of the cheek, to collect cheek cell DNA, with no needles required.
To provide you with the most accurate result, it is recommended that the potential grandparent who has a claimed biological link to the child should be tested along with the child and their biological mother (or father, if the grandparent is related to the child through the mother). However, this is not essential, and the test can still be performed without a biological parent’s DNA sample.
