What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which causes inflammation and enlargement of the liver.
The virus is spread through contact with blood or other body fluids from an infected person.
Symptoms can include:
- feeling sick or being sick
- lack of appetite
- flu-like symptoms, such as a high temperature, tiredness and general aches & pains
- yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
Infections can vary from a mild form that lasts a few weeks to a more serious (chronic) infection that can cause lasting liver damage.
Why have a hepatitis B immunity test?
The AlphaBiolabs hepatitis B immunity test measures the level of protection you have against the hepatitis B virus, following a course of vaccinations.
Hepatitis B vaccinations are recommended for:
- People whose job puts them at risk of infection, as they might come into contact with blood or bodily fluids from another person (e.g. healthcare workers, laboratory staff, people who work in a prison)
- People travelling to countries where hepatitis B is widespread
- People who change their sexual partner frequently
- Anyone who wants reassurance that they have protection against hepatitis B
As well as understanding your level of protection against the hepatitis B virus, this test also helps you make an informed decision about whether or not you require further vaccinations.
When should the test be taken?
The test should be taken at least 4 weeks after completing a course of hepatitis B injections, or at least 4 weeks after a booster injection. What will the results show?
The test will provide a quantified result indicating the level of protection you have against future hepatitis B infections.
This quantified result is a numerical quantification of antibodies detected in the blood sample. This value can be monitored over time to determine whether you still have adequate protection, or whether a booster vaccination is recommended.
Your result will include recommendations as to whether or not you need a booster vaccination.
