DNA Maternity Testing

Maternity testing is a highly accurate method of identifying whether a woman is a child’s biological mother.

For a peace of mind maternity DNA test, cheek (buccal) swabs are used to collect cheek cell DNA from the alleged mother and the child.

Once these samples arrive at the laboratory, our in-house geneticists analyse and compare the DNA samples.

The test looks at up to 45 DNA markers (loci) to identify matching DNA markers in the alleged mother’s sample and the child’s sample.

If the woman is the biological mother of the child, both will share enough DNA markers to indicate a biological relationship. If the tested woman is not the biological mother, this will not be the case.

A maternity DNA test can be useful in several situations, including:

• When a child is conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and the parent(s) would like to confirm that the correct embryo was implanted in the woman’s uterus
• When an adopted child and mother are reunited after years of separation and would like to confirm their biological relationship
• When there are concerns that baby switching has mistakenly occurred within a hospital
