AlphaBiolabs has been operating for over 15 years in the alcohol testing sector. Our legal alcohol testing is recognised and admissible to UK courts.

Easy-to-use breath alcohol device

Breath test devices (breathalysers) are used to measure the alcohol concentration in a person’s breath. As such, they measure current alcohol consumption. They do not measure historical use of alcohol. This means that this method of testing can be used to prove sobriety as and when needed.

The compact shape of the devices makes them particularly easy to hold, and they can be controlled with one hand.

The person being tested for alcohol use blows into a disposable mouthpiece attached to the breath alcohol device. They are advised not to take anything by mouth in the 20 minutes prior to breath sampling.

The results are given as a digital readout, known as the breath alcohol concentration (BAC), which shows the level of alcohol in the breath at the time the test was taken. A second reading is only taken if the first reading is greater than zero.

UK-certified breathalysers assume that the subject being tested has a 2300-to-1 partition ratio in converting alcohol measured in the breath to estimates of alcohol in the blood. This measure is in direct proportion to the grams of alcohol to every 1 ml of blood.

Breath alcohol testing

On-site and point-of-care breath alcohol testing

The compact breath alcohol test device is used by UK police for roadside drink-driving checks, and by social workers for point-of-care testing when evaluating child protection issues. Breath alcohol tests are also routinely used as part of scheduled workplace tests, at short notice for random alcohol testing or in the case of ‘for cause’ testing.

AlphaBiolabs can provide a number of Home Office-type approved breathalysers dependent on your individual needs.

  • Dräger Alcotest 6820
  • Dräger Alcotest 5820
  • Lion 500

The devices allow automatic sampling and calibration and all use electrochemical fuel technology. When alcohol comes in contact with the sensor, it generates a small amount of electricity. The electricity is measured and converted into the breathalyser reading.

The amplitude of the electric current is dependent on the amount of ethanol detected in the breath sample.

Sample collection

Easy sample collection options

AlphaBiolabs has a dedicated, fully qualified sample collection team available around the clock, every day of the year. Our collectors follow strict procedures to ensure the chain of custody is retained and that confidentiality remains throughout the whole testing process.

AlphaBiolabs can also train a representative of your own staff to perform breath alcohol testing and sample collection to the highest standards. This means that they will also be able to collect samples whilst retaining the chain of custody.
