The teenage pregnancy rate in England and Wales is continuing to fall, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.
The quarterly figures show that the overall teenage pregnancy rate stood at 23.3 per 1000 women aged 15 to 17, compared to 25.4 in the previous year. This pointed to a 4% fall on the previous quarter and an 8% decrease year on year.
The stats also indicate that there were 5,740 pregnancies to girls aged under 18 in the three months until June last year, which meant a 2% decrease on the previous quarter and 9% year on year.
This is somewhat surprising as historically, the UK has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Western Europe.
“Improvements in Contraception Advice and Services”
The drop could partly be down to various campaigns and strategies attempting to greatly reduce teen pregnancy numbers.
A spokesperson for the British Pregnancy Advisory Service said: “Contrary to popular perception, this data shows that the teenage pregnancy rate is falling dramatically in England and Wales. While the UK has historically had a high teenage conception rate, it is now at its lowest level on record and not significantly out of step with other European countries.
“We have seen a huge decline in the number of babies born to teenage mothers over the last decade, in part due to the improvements we’ve seen in contraception advice and services for younger women, with straightforward access to abortion services when their chosen method lets them down. But it also reflects broader societal shifts, with younger women quite rightly expecting and able to pursue educational and professional ambitions.”
Prenatal DNA Testing
AlphaBiolabs can provide prenatal DNA testing to those who wish to establish a biological relationship between an individual and an unborn child (most commonly an alleged father).
This is a non-intrusive method, safely analysing the child’s DNA through the mother’s blood, therefore it is a form of testing that can be performed from an early stage of pregnancy.
However, for ethical reasons, AlphaBiolabs only offer this service when the mother has been pregnant for 24 weeks or more.
