Post rehabilitation drug and alcohol testing
Post-rehabilitation drug and alcohol testing can be used to check if employees are misusing drugs or alcohol after a previous confirmed positive drug or alcohol test. It is also referred to as return-to-work testing or follow-up testing, as it is often used as part of an employee’s reintegration to work.
Drug and alcohol testing does not always have to be used as a means to reprimand someone. If an employee has previously misused drugs or alcohol, post-rehabilitation testing can be used as part of their support plan and give them a second chance. If the original offence is not too severe, then employers could provide staff with the opportunity to make changes if they are willing and able to, formally agreeing to no longer misuse drugs and alcohol.
The implementation of treatment and rehabilitation programmes alongside a return-to-work testing within a drug and alcohol testing policy can show compassion during the deterrence, without increasing staff turnover.
AlphaBiolabs can provide confidential and customised post-rehabilitation testing to fit your exact business needs, either as part of a new treatment or rehabilitation programme or as part of an existing one.
Post-rehabilitation testing can be useful in many business sectors and we can also provide consultancy and policy advice to determine under what circumstance return-to-work testing is suitable.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, the employer has a duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees
Why wait for your laboratory confirmations?
We understand how important your drug and alcohol testing policy is to the employees, the business and all stakeholders involved. However, we also understand the disruption that can be caused if key personnel provide a non-negative sample.
AlphaBiolabs is here to help. That’s why we have developed a rapid testing service to provide laboratory confirmation results, the same day if required.
Furthermore, we can also provide training and education at any stage of the process, which can help ensure the successful implementation and development of your drug and alcohol policy.
Dedicated drug and alcohol testing sample collection team
Our dedicated fully qualified sample collectors are available nationwide for drug and alcohol testing, on call around the clock any day of the year.
They are fully trained to take samples for a number of drug and alcohol tests including breathalysers, oral fluid and urine testing.
This means that with all of our testing they follow strict procedures that keep the chain of custody throughout the process. Following these procedures means that the information and results will be kept 100% confidential at all times and that the testing will be accurately conducted with exactly who is intended to be tested.
Our sample collection team can be called upon for a number of scenarios during post-rehabilitation testing:
- As part of regularly scheduled appointments
- As part of for-cause testing if you have reasonable grounds to suspect the employee is misusing drugs or alcohol again
- Random drug and alcohol testing with short or no notice to the employee to promote consistent good behaviour
- Post-incident drug and alcohol testing if someone with a previous positive for drug or alcohol misuse has been involved in an incident
We provide the fastest lab confirmations available: same day results if required
Our workplace drug and alcohol testing methods include:
Oral fluid drug testing
Oral fluid drug testing is a workplace drug testing method that can be used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their saliva and analysing it for particular substances.
An immediate negative result may mean that no further action needs to be taken, but a non-negative result will then undergo confirmation testing from the laboratory to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.
This form of workplace drug testing can be particularly useful if you do not have anywhere suitably private to collect the sample, if the sample collector is of a different gender to the donor or if a urine sample cannot be provided for any particular reason.
Oral fluid drug testing is known as a ‘narrow window’ form of testing as its period of detection is up to 48 hours, although this can depend on the particular substance taken.
Urine drug testing
Urine drug testing is a workplace drug testing method that can be used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their urine and analysing it for particular substances.
This form of testing can be particularly useful for on-site / point of care testing as an immediate negative result will mean that no further action is necessary. A non-negative result may require confirmation testing from the laboratory in order to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.
This form of workplace drug testing has been established for many years, with an abundance of scientific evidence to support its accuracy when all the relevant procedures are followed.
Urine drug testing is known as a ‘narrow-window’ form of testing and its period of detection is approximately 4 days although this can depend on the particular substance taken.

Hair drug testing
Hair drug testing is a form of workplace drug testing that can be used, usually to support other methods such as oral fluid or urine testing.
It can be particularly useful for a more comprehensive overview of a person’s drug use as it is known as a ‘wide-window’ form of testing, which can determine a history of drug intake for up to 12 months.
In general, hair drug testing is an extremely useful form of testing, and can provide support to workplace testing.
Breath alcohol testing
The person being tested for alcohol use blows into a breath alcohol device, and the results are given as a digital readout.
The readout is a number, known as the breath alcohol concentration (BAC), which shows the level of alcohol in the breath at the time the test was taken. It does not measure past use of alcohol.
We have a number of devices we can use for breath alcohol testing dependent on your individual needs.
