A coronavirus antigen test with rapid results
The AlphaBiolabs COVID-19 Antigen (Ag) Rapid Test is an individually packaged, self-contained, sample collection device, lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay for the detection of SARSCoV-2 (COVID-19) viral (nucleoprotein) antigens in human nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal (nose and throat) samples.
The AlphaBiolabs COVID-19 Antigen (Ag) Rapid Test is one of the world’s first rapid screening tests for the identification of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), from 14 days after initial exposure to the virus and or after the onset of symptoms.
There is no laboratory testing required, instead results are available in just 15 minutes via the portable immunoassay device.
Please note: This test is for business/professional use only.

How does the rapid antigen test work?
How do I understand the Antigen results?
A total of two detection lines are possible. The control (C) line appears when the sample flows through the testing device cassette, after the buffer liquid containing the sample has been added.
The test result is negative if the only the quality control line (C) appears. This means no COVID-19 specific antigens have been detected.
The test result is positive if the quality control line (C) and the antigen detection line (T) appears. This means COVID-19 specific antigens have been detected.
Where this is the case, the tested individual must follow the latest government guidance on quarantining and self-isolation.
If the quality control line (C) does not appear or it takes over 20 minutes for the line(s) to appear the results are invalid.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the benefit of the AlphaBiolabs COVID-19 Antigen rapid test?
Why wait for results? As part of your company’s strategy to help keep your employees and workplaces COVID secure and operational, the AlphaBiolabs COVID-19 instant Antigen test is an affordable, fast and accurate way to determine the infection status of employees onsite or returning to the workplace.
What’s the difference between the COVID-19 Antigen Test and the COVID-19 PCR test?
The COVID-19 PCR test detects the virus’ genetic material (RNA) within a positive sample. A laboratory process is required to test the sample and can take up to 72 hrs to return a result from the time of sample collection.
The COVID-19 Antigen test detects specific proteins situated on the cell membranes of the COVID-19 virus. These proteins are known as antigens and can be quickly detected, within 15 minutes, using the lateral flow immunoassay device.
Both tests require a swab sample to be taken from the nose and throat areas, which can be collected by the individual taking the test or with the assistance of an occupational health practitioner.
Both the instant COVID-19 Antigen Test and the COVID-19 PCR test are effective methods for detecting the presence of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus but the instant Antigen test delivers quicker results.
How quickly can I get the results?
The test is designed to give you a result within 15 minutes, after the swab sample has been placed in the sample (S) well of the immunoassay device. There is no need to send your sample to our laboratory for confirmatory testing.

Is the COVID-19 Antigen test CE Marked?
Yes, according to Directive 98/79/EC on in-vitro-diagnostic devices (Annex III), our COVID-19 antigen lateral flow immunoassay device conforms with the Essential Requirements Annex I of the directive (98/79/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 October 1998) on in-vitro diagnostic medical devices.
The product is suitable for its intended application which is for workplaces and professional use.
Is the rapid Antigen device approved by the MHRA?
The immunoassay screening devices contained within our rapid antigen testing kits exceed the minimum specification detailed on page 8 in the attached MHRA report.
How accurate is the Antigen Coronavirus test?
The performance data from our screening device manufacturers shows the diagnostic sensitivity for COVID-19 specific antigens of upto 97.6%, with a diagnostic specificity of 99.9%.
Is it possible to get a false negative result?
Whilst there is reportedly a 30% chance of returning a false negative result, the reasons for this include:
- insufficient viral load present in the nasal / throat areas when sample collection occurred
- incorrect sample collection procedure (if the sample collection is not uncomfortable, it is highly likely the sample has been incorrectly collected). See this link for an example of a correct sample collection procedure.
It is therefore vitally important that the sample collection is carried out in line with our instructions contained within the kit box.
If you believe you have received a false negative result, you can either perform the test again a couple of days later, order a ‘back to lab’ PCR test if available, or combine testing with an instant antibody test.
What is an antigen?
An antigen is any substance that your immune system sees as a threat and as a result causes the immune system to produce antibodies against it. Antigens are usually proteins, peptides (amino acid chains) and polysaccharides that can stimulate an immune response. Each antigen has a distinct surface feature which allows it to be detected using a chromatographic immunoassay.
How reliable is the instant COVID-19 Antigen test?
Our COVID-19 specific instant Antigen screening kit allows you to accurately determine if the COVID-19 virus is present in the sample being tested. With a sensitivity and specificity value of up to 97.6% and 99.9% respectively, the test is very robust and reliable.
What should I do with a positive COVID-19 result?
If you receive a positive result you should follow the latest government guidelines on self-isolation and quarantining. AlphaBiolabs will notify your GP, who is legally bound to inform Public Health England know as coronavirus is notifiable disease.
What if I get a positive result but don’t feel unwell?
Regardless of whether you feel unwell, if you receive a positive result you should follow the latest government guidelines on the NHS website regarding self-isolation and quarantining, which can be found here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/
- If you had a test because you had symptoms, keep self-isolating for at least 10 days from when your symptoms started.
- If you had a test but have not had symptoms, self-isolate for 10 days from when you had the test.
Anyone you live with, and anyone in your support bubble, must self-isolate for 14 days from when you start self-isolating.
