For families seeking to be reunited in the UK, a DNA test can be one of the most significant pieces of evidence they ever provide.
This was a central theme of DNA Evidence, Interpretation & Services in Immigration Casework, a session held at King’s College London and attended by our Director of Genetics, Casey Randall.
The event marked the publication of new research from DNA Analysis at King’s, exploring how DNA evidence is produced, interpreted and used in UK immigration cases. It brought together testing laboratories, specialist immigration solicitors and support charities, with AlphaBiolabs among the expert providers that contributed to the research.
Here, we look at what the findings mean for applicants and the immigration solicitors and advisers who support them, and what to look for when choosing a testing laboratory for immigration DNA testing.
What the research means for applicants
When official documents such as birth certificates are unavailable, incomplete or questioned, DNA testing can provide objective, scientific evidence of a biological relationship.
As the discussion at King’s highlighted, a DNA report is rarely the only evidence in an application. It is best viewed as one item in a “suitcase” of evidence, alongside documents, photographs, letters and other proof of an established family relationship.
Under the Home Office’s DNA policy guidance, providing DNA evidence is entirely voluntary. For families who choose to do so, the research highlights several important points:
- The right test matters: the most suitable test depends on the relationship being proved
- Some relationships need specialist testing: relationships beyond parent and child, such as siblings, aunts, uncles or cousins, require more complex analysis
- Expert guidance makes a difference: DNA testing isn’t something most families do every day, so clear advice and support from their provider, from choosing the right test to understanding the results, is invaluable
Casey said: “What came across clearly is that a DNA test is never just a lab result for these families. It’s an increasingly relevant piece of evidence to obtain, and getting every step right, from sample collection to a clear, well-explained report, can make all the difference to a family being reunited.”

What to look for in an immigration DNA testing laboratory
Choosing the right laboratory gives applicants, and the immigration solicitors and advisers who support them, confidence that their DNA evidence will meet the standards the Home Office and HM Passport Office expect.
When choosing a testing laboratory, look for:
- The right accreditation: the laboratory should be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), and its schedule of accreditation should cover the specific relationship being tested
- Transparency about where testing takes place: applicants should know which laboratory will analyse their samples, and in which country
- Experience with complex relationships: not every laboratory is accredited to test relationships beyond parent and child, so specialist expertise is essential where these are involved
- Professional sample collection: samples should be collected by trained, independent sample collectors in line with Home Office collection standards, whether in the UK or overseas
- Clear, well-presented reports: results should be reported in a format that meets Home Office and HM Passport Office requirements
- Support at every stage: a dedicated team who can advise on the most suitable test and help families understand their results
