Breath alcohol testing explained
- 1 Breath testing devices (breathalysers) are used to measure the alcohol concentration in a person’s breath
- 2 As such, they measure current alcohol consumption, rather than historic alcohol consumption.
- 3 This method of testing can be used to demonstrate sobriety as and when needed, and is ideal for point-of-care testing when assessing child welfare matters.
Sample collection
- The Sample Donor is advised not to eat, drink or smoke in the 20 minutes prior to providing a breath sample for testing.
- During a breath alcohol test, the Sample Donor is asked to blow into a disposable mouthpiece, attached to the breathalyser device.
- The results are given as an instant digital readout, known as the breath alcohol concentration (BAC), which shows the level of alcohol in the person’s breath at the time the test was taken.
- If the first reading is greater than zero, the sample collector will take a second reading.
