Gabapentin Drug Testing

Gabapentin – also known by the brand name Neurontin – is a prescription medicine used to treat epilepsy and nerve pain. It belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, though it also has calming and pain-relieving effects.

Gabapentin is often prescribed for long-term nerve-related pain, particularly when other treatments have not been effective. This includes pain linked to conditions such as diabetes, shingles, fibromyalgia, or spinal injuries.

Although it is not an opioid, gabapentin can cause similar sensations, including relaxation, reduced anxiety, and pain relief. These effects can lead to misuse, especially when the drug is taken in higher doses or without a prescription.

Possible side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, mood changes, and confusion. When prescribed legally, a doctor or other healthcare professional will monitor its use carefully to reduce the risk of dependency or harmful side effects.

Gabapentin is usually swallowed in the form of capsules, tablets, or a liquid, which may be prescribed for people who have difficulty swallowing pills.

Capsules and tablets come in a range of colours and strengths, depending on the brand and dosage.

Some people who misuse gabapentin, including recreational drug users or those taking more than prescribed, may open the capsules to swallow the powder or attempt to snort it. This is dangerous and increases the risk of serious side effects such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, breathing difficulties, or overdose, especially when combined with other depressants like alcohol or opioids.

Misuse can also lead to dependence or addiction.

Even after the ‘high’ has worn off, and long after the drug was first consumed, gabapentin misuse can be detected by a drug test, depending on the type of test you take.

The drug testing detection windows for gabapentin are as follows:

• Hair – up to 12 months (depending on the length of hair available)
• Nails – up to 12 months (up to 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails)

The rate at which hair and nails grow means that both hair drug testing and nail drug testing provide a ‘wide-window’ of detection for drugs and their metabolites.

The type of drug test you need depends on your circumstances, and how you intend to use the results of the test.

Hair drug tests and nail drug tests provide us with a wide window of detection (up to 12 months). This is due to the way in which drugs are retained in the hair and nails, long after substances were first consumed.

Hair drug tests can be used to identify a month-by-month pattern or an overview of drug use (segmented or overview analysis) for up to 12 months. Nail drug tests are ideal where hair testing is not possible, providing an overview of historic drug use up to six months (fingernails) or up to 12 months (toenails).  

If you require a drug test for legal reasons, or other official matters, you will need to instruct us for a legal drug test. For a legal drug test, samples are collected by a professional sample collector under strict chain of custody conditions, ensuring the test results are court-admissible.

For these tests, you can collect your own samples in the comfort of your own home and return them to our laboratory for testing. The results of these tests cannot be used in court or for official matters.
